The 1989 Proof Krugerrand coins were released individually for the 1 oz and 1/2 oz versions, while the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof Krugerrands were sold together in what was known as a pair SAM case.
From 1987 to 1991, some Proof Krugerrands were minted at Gold Reef City (GRC). The initials GRC, which stand for Gold Reef City, can be found above the "FYN" in "FYNGOUD."
These coins were minted using the original OOM PAUL Press, which had been relocated to the Gold Reef City Mint. In 1989, a total of 987 Gold Reef City Proof Krugerrands were minted. There were no GRC Bullion Krugerrands produced that year.
One ounce 1989 Proof Krugerrand
As the value of bullion Krugerrand coins is closely tied to the price of gold, determining the exact value of a 1989 Proof Krugerrand can be challenging. However, a reasonable estimate would be around 105% of the gold price. The coin is worth considerably more if paired with fractional Proof Krugerrands.
