The Krugerrand Proofs were released in 1988 as individual 1-ounce Proof Krugerrands and 1/2-ounce Proof Krugerrands in SAM Cases. The 1/4-ounce and 1/10-ounce Proof Krugerrands were issued together in what was known as a pair SAM case.
From 1987 to 1991, some Proof Krugerrands were minted at Gold Reef City. These coins bear the initials GRC, which stand for Gold Reef City, positioned above the FYN in FYNGOUD.
These coins were struck using the original OOM PAUL Press, which was relocated to the Gold Reef City Mint. In 1988, a total of 1,222 Gold Reef City Proof Krugerrands were minted. No GRC Bullion Krugerrands were produced that year.
One-ounce 1988 Proof Krugerrand
The value of bullion Krugerrand coins is closely tied to the price of gold, making it difficult to determine the exact price of a 1988 Proof Krugerrand. However, a reasonable estimate for a 1988 Proof Krugerrand is around 105% of the gold price. It is worth considerably more if included with fractional Proof Krugerrands.
